Bruges, Medieval Flanders & the Dutch Bulbfields is a spring river cruise that pairs two of Europe's most photogenic traditions: the medieval trading cities of Flanders and the tulip season at Keukenhof. Operated by Riviera Travel, it is a seven-night voyage that begins and ends in Amsterdam aboard one of the line's five-star river ships, with 2027 departures starting March 27.
The medieval half of the trip is the Belgian leg. Antwerp, birthplace of the Baroque master Rubens, is explored on a guided tour through the Grote Markt, the Renaissance town hall, and the Brabo Fountain. Guests then choose between a guided walk through Ghent, a once-powerful cloth-trading city of canals and guildhouses, and a full-day excursion to Ypres and Tyne Cot Cemetery. The finale is Bruges, one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe, discovered on a guided tour with free time afterward to wander its canals on your own.
The Netherlands bookends the cruise. Day two is the headline Keukenhof visit — nearly eighty acres of the world's largest flower garden, open for only a few months each spring — followed by an afternoon in Amsterdam. Day three brings a morning of cruising and a choice in Arnhem between the Airborne Museum and Commonwealth War Cemetery at Oosterbeek or the Netherlands Open Air Museum. The last full day returns to Amsterdam for a classic glass-topped canal-boat cruise before disembarkation.
Riviera's formula is all-inclusive. The fare covers full-board dining with a Chef's Dinner (except one lunch), a free all-inclusive drinks package, Wi-Fi, tea and coffee, port charges and taxes, an on-board Cruise Director and Cruise Host, and eight included experiences. Cabins come with a window or a French balcony, and the ships serving this route are intimate by cruise standards, carrying roughly 130 to 180 guests.
For a geek traveler, the draw is the medieval merchant-city atmosphere: the guildhalls, belfries, and canals of Flanders are the real-world template for countless fantasy trade cities, and Arnhem and Ypres add a sobering layer of twentieth-century history. It is a gentler, flower-filled counterpart to the castle-heavy Rhine and Main cruises, and it suits travelers who want one comfortable base and a new city almost every day.
Practical notes: the 8-day cruise starts in Amsterdam, about 45 minutes from Amsterdam Airport and 20 minutes from the central station. Riviera's page lists spring 2027 departures from March 27 through April 27, with fares starting from $3,099 per person (two sharing) and the specific 2027 sailings we checked in October 2026 priced from about $3,249 to $4,649. Tulip-season dates fill quickly — several April sailings showed limited availability — so confirm current prices and availability with Riviera, since discounts change often.
