New Zealand

Middle-earth is real and you can actually visit it

Why Nerds Love This Place

New Zealand is Middle-earth. Not metaphorically. Literally. The Shire exists. You can visit Bag End. You can hike Mount Doom. Every landscape looks like it should have hobbits or elves hiding behind the next hill. Peter Jackson filmed here for a reason, and that reason is that New Zealand is basically a fantasy novel that came to life. The Hobbiton movie set is permanent and fully functional. You can drink at the Green Dragon Inn. You will cry. Everyone cries. It's part of the experience. Bring tissues and extra memory cards for your camera.

Key Highlights

Hobbiton Movie Set

The actual Shire from Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Permanent hobbit holes, the Green Dragon Inn, and landscapes that will make you question why you don't live in New Zealand. Tissues mandatory.

Tongariro National Park

Mount Doom is real and you can hike it. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is 19km of volcanic landscapes, emerald lakes, and the exact spot where Frodo destroyed the Ring. Bring proper hiking gear. Frodo made it look easier than it is.

Weta Workshop

Where the movie magic happened. See props, costumes, and the craftsmanship that brought Middle-earth to life. Tour guides are passionate and knowledgeable. You'll leave inspired and slightly jealous of their jobs.

Waitomo Glowworm Caves

Underground caves lit by thousands of glowworms. Looks like a scene from Avatar. Not technically LOTR-related but absolutely magical and worth the detour.
