Anime Messe Babelsberg turns Filmpark Babelsberg — a working film-studio theme park just outside Berlin — into an anime and manga playground for four days each July, and the 2027 edition, running July 22–25, is a milestone: the festival's 10th anniversary. It's one of the more unusual convention settings in Europe, since the halls, backlots and outdoor stages of an actual movie studio become the show floor rather than a generic exhibition center.
The program leans hard into live entertainment. The open-air Volcano Arena hosts concerts throughout the weekend, and for the anniversary edition, Thursday opens with an exclusive birthday concert show in the festival hall before the main event even begins. Guests of honour and musicians flown in from Japan hold panels, signings and Q&As across the four days, alongside voice actors, manga artists and other creators drawn from across the anime industry.
Cosplay is a centerpiece, with the flagship costume contest held on the Saturday, when competitors bring elaborate builds to the main stage for judged performances in front of a packed crowd. Around the competition, the park's backlots and film sets double as a rolling photo studio, giving cosplayers backdrops that a standard convention center simply can't match. A Japanese-style market with Matsuri food stalls, an anime cinema, gaming areas, and a late-night J-Disco round out the program, and one ticket covers all of it plus general admission to Filmpark Babelsberg itself.
Getting there is straightforward: Filmpark Babelsberg sits in Potsdam, a short regional-train ride from central Berlin, making it an easy day-trip destination even for visitors based in the capital rather than staying locally. Potsdam itself is worth the detour regardless — Sanssouci Palace and its gardens are a short distance away, giving the weekend a cultural counterweight to the anime programming.
For a geek traveler, Anime Messe Babelsberg is a reason to build a summer trip around Berlin that most anime fans overlook — Germany's anime scene is deep and enthusiastic, but the country's biggest dedicated shows (AnimagiC, DoKomi) sit in Mannheim and Düsseldorf, leaving Babelsberg as the capital region's own flagship. Ticket sales for the anniversary edition are already underway, and a 10th-anniversary program tends to sell out faster than usual, so booking ahead is worth it.
Practical notes: the festival runs rain or shine across the park's indoor and outdoor spaces, so pack for July weather in the Berlin area — warm days, the occasional shower. Bring cash for the Matsuri food stalls alongside a card for the main ticketing and merchandise areas, and plan cosplay changes around the park's facilities, since backlot photo sessions can eat up more time than expected. Check the official site for the confirmed guest list, concert lineup and ticket tiers as the anniversary weekend approaches.
