Fantasy Basel – The Swiss Comic Con

May 15–17, 2027 · Basel

Fantasy Basel – The Swiss Comic Con has grown from a first edition of just over 20,000 visitors in 2015 to roughly 103,000 in 2026, making it the largest pop-culture convention in Switzerland. It fills more than 100,000 square meters of Messe Basel each May, with over 800 exhibitors and an Artist Alley of 300+ illustrators, tattoo artists and urban artists.

The programming spans the full breadth of fandom: panels and interviews with film and TV guests, readings and live drawing on smaller stages, a Nintendo Zone, and a cosplay scene that is among the best organized in Europe. Past guests have included Kevin Sussman, Graham McTavish, Kristian Nairn, Natalia Tena and Alfred Enoch, and the organizers say further 2027 guests will be announced on an ongoing basis.

The Cosplay Village is the signature feature: a protected area where cosplayers can change and touch up makeup, and a social hub for the scene. There is no costume requirement, all weapons must pass the on-site weapons check, and the golden rule is to always ask before touching or photographing a cosplayer.

The growth has been steady: roughly 30,000 visitors in 2016, 54,000 in 2019, 88,000 in 2024 and 97,000 in 2025, before crossing 100,000 in 2026. The 2027 edition keeps the format that has made it popular with families as well as hardcore fans, with a Family Day on Monday where children and young people up to 16 pay half price and children under 9 enter free when accompanied by an adult. Day tickets allow re-entry, and entry slots are staggered, which helps keep the queues manageable.

For a geek traveler, Basel is an unusually convenient host city. It sits where Switzerland, France and Germany meet, with EuroAirport about 15 minutes from the venue by car and a direct train from Zurich Airport in under an hour. Messe Basel is served by trams to the Messeplatz stop (lines 1 and 2 from the main station, lines 2 and 6 from Badischer Bahnhof), and travelers arriving by train can get 20% off via the official SBB link.

Practical notes: the 2027 edition runs Saturday to Monday, May 15–17, over the Pentecost weekend, and Monday is Family Day. Tickets go through Ticketcorner: a three-day Festival Pass costs CHF 121 for adults, and a single day ticket is CHF 50 in advance or CHF 55 at the box office. Outside food is not allowed, so budget for the on-site stands.
