MagicCon: Detroit 2027

MagicCon is the official convention series for Magic: The Gathering, run by publisher Wizards of the Coast, and MagicCon: Detroit opens the 2027 season from February 26–28. It is the first time the flagship Magic event has come to Detroit, and it lands just weeks after the release of the year's first premier set, Nauctis: The Sunken Realm — so the convention floor will be buzzing with fresh cards, brand-new strategies and the first big in-person tournaments played with the new set.

Like every MagicCon, Detroit packs three days with the full spectrum of Magic. At the top end is premier competitive play, including a Pro Tour — days of the world's best players grinding through Standard and Booster Draft for a large prize pool, invitations and a shot at the year-end World Championship. Around that headline event runs everything else the game has to offer: open and casual play halls where anyone can sit down for Commander, drafts and pick-up games at any hour; artist booths with signings and original art; cosplay; panels and previews of upcoming sets; a huge vendor and singles marketplace; and exclusive promo cards and giveaways available only on site. The supported formats run the gamut too — from Standard and the eternal formats to the wildly popular Commander tables — so whether you arrive as a hardened competitor or a kitchen-table player, there is a seat waiting for you.

At time of writing the specific venue had not been announced; Wizards directs attendees to mtgfestivals.com for badges and event details, and downtown Detroit's Huntington Place is the city's convention center most likely to host an event of this scale. Detroit sits on the international border with Windsor, Canada, and Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW) is a major hub, so it's an easy arrival for players across North America and beyond.

For a traveling player, a February trip to Detroit pairs the convention with a city in the middle of a well-documented revival: the Detroit Institute of Arts (home to the Diego Rivera murals), the Motown Museum, the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village in nearby Dearborn, and a genuinely excellent food and music scene. Late February is cold — pack for a Midwestern winter — which makes a warm convention hall full of Magic all the more inviting, and the crowds all the more social.
