Otakon

Otakon is one of the largest and longest-running celebrations of Asian pop culture in North America, held each summer at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in downtown Washington, D.C. Founded in 1994, it runs annually in late July / early August (the 2026 edition ran July 31 – August 2) and has built a devoted following over three decades, with attendance in the tens of thousands across its three days.

The event covers anime, manga, music, film, video games and the wider world of East Asian pop culture. The event's history is part of its identity: after more than two decades in Baltimore, Otakon moved to Washington in 2017 and kept right on growing, and its long-running concerts — sometimes billed as the Otakon Music Festival — remain a major draw, bringing Japanese artists to the U.S. capital.
