Sakura-Con

Sakura-Con is the oldest and most well-attended anime convention in the Pacific Northwest, held each spring at the Seattle Convention Center in downtown Seattle; the 2027 edition runs March 26–28. Presented by the non-profit Asia Northwest Cultural Education Association and running since the late 1990s, it's a beloved, community-run event that blends Japanese pop culture with genuine cultural programming.

The convention covers the full anime-fandom spectrum. Expect guests of honour from Japan — voice actors, directors and musicians — alongside a large exhibitors' hall, an Artist Alley packed with independent creators, and a strong gaming presence spanning video, arcade and tabletop. Cosplay is a defining feature, with masquerade contests and gatherings throughout the weekend, and the event's cultural panels, concerts, maid café and traditional-arts programming give it a warmth and depth that set it apart from purely commercial shows.

Seattle makes an excellent host. The Seattle Convention Center sits in the heart of downtown, walkable to hundreds of hotels and restaurants and a short monorail ride from the Space Needle and Seattle Center. Seattle–Tacoma International Airport connects to downtown by the Link light rail in about 40 minutes, so you can arrive and get around without a car. Late March weather is cool and often wet, which makes a warm convention hall full of anime all the more appealing.

Badges are sold in advance through the official Sakura-Con site, typically as full-event passes, and they sell out ahead of the event as the community books early — so reserve yours before booking travel. Bring comfortable shoes, a portable charger and some cash for artists and small vendors, though cards are widely accepted.

Beyond the headline programming, Sakura-Con is beloved for the details that make a fan weekend memorable: a maid café, an AMV (anime music video) contest, cosplay chess, karaoke, artist workshops and late-night events that keep the convention buzzing well past the exhibit hall's closing.
