Tokyo Comic Con is Japan's largest Western-style pop-culture convention, held each winter at the vast Makuhari Messe exhibition centre on the edge of Tokyo. The 2026 edition runs December 11–13. Launched in 2016 — its inaugural year famously drawing Stan Lee — it deliberately imports the American comic-con formula and drops it into a country that already lives and breathes pop culture. Guests skew toward Western film and TV — the event has hosted a long roll-call of Hollywood actors — but there is plenty for anime, manga and gaming fans too, and the crossover crowd is part of the charm. Cosplay is a highlight in its own right; Japan's cosplayers are famous for immaculate, screen-accurate builds, and Tokyo Comic Con gives them a proper stage with registration areas, shoots and contests.

Getting there is easy. Makuhari Messe is roughly a five-minute walk from Kaihin-Makuhari Station on the JR Keiyō Line, about 30–40 minutes from central Tokyo, and it sits beside a cluster of hotels, malls and restaurants if you'd rather stay close and skip the daily commute. Tickets are sold by day and as multi-day and premium passes through the official site; priority entry, and photo and autograph tickets for the biggest guests, sell out first, so decide early which sessions matter and book the moment they go on sale.

For a geek traveler, Tokyo Comic Con is a near-perfect December anchor. The rest of the itinerary writes itself: the arcades, retro-game shops and anime stores of Akihabara, the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, the digital-art spectacle of teamLab, and Tokyo's endless, world-beating food scene.
